Decorating Ideas for Bunk Beds
By : Robert Lobitz
While bunk beds provide functionality and offer more usable space in a room, it may seem as though they are more difficult to decorate than a traditional bed might be. You cannot really use conventional bedding such as a dust ruffle, for example. In addition,
bunkbeds are usually shared by at least two children who may have vastly different tastes and hobbies. One way to decorate a room with stacked bunks is to come up with a theme that suits all of the kids involved and then work the furniture into that decor.
For instance, if you are decorating
bunk beds for a pair of young boys, you might opt for a pirate ship theme. Fly a Jolly Roger from the foot of the upper bed. Drape a black cloth, such as a king size sheet, under the mattress of the top bunk so that it covers much of the space between the two beds. Cut circles that are about the size of your children's faces out of the center area of the cloth to resemble portholes; you may even wish to embellish these windows by attaching rivets around them. Wrap the beds in gold- and jewel-toned bedding to look like a swashbuckler's treasure.
Girls who are sharing bunk beds would likely adore a princess theme. Paint the furniture white and cover in pink and purple bedding. Create turrets from wood or cardboard to place upon the posts on each corner of the upper bunk. Top each turret with a pink or purple flag made from gauzy fabric. Fashion a long braid from yarn and hang it near the ladder of the bunk beds to resemble Rapunzel's hair. If you are especially artistic, you may even wish to paint a mural on the wall behind the "castle," picturing a brave knight and a colorful dragon or an elegant carriage and a fairy godmother.

Even if you are decorating for a boy and girl or simply want a room that is not gender-specific, there are many suitable themes from which to choose. For instance, most kids would love bunk beds that have been decorated to look like a tree house. Design trees out of plywood or sturdy cardboard to cover the fronts of the bedposts. Tent the top bunk with light brown fabric to resemble a hut or fort and place stuffed animals on the bottom bunk, whether you choose woodland creatures such as squirrels or tropical creatures like monkeys.
As you can see, a room that has bunk beds does not have to be difficult or boring. In fact, it can become quite an enjoyable endeavor when you consider your children's likings and use your imagination.
